The poet Jules Romains described her as someone devoted to literature: She opened her store, La Maison des Amies des Livres, in 1915. When Adrienne’s father came into some money, he gave it to Adrienne to use as capital for a bookstore. Sylvia used to say that she had three great loves: “ Shakespeare and Company, James Joyce, and Adrienne Monnier.” Sylvia BeachĪdrienne came from a working-class family (her father was a postal worker) that had an interest in the arts. After the war, she returned to France, where she met Adrienne Monnier. During WWI she served with the Red Cross in Serbia. From that point on, Sylvia divided her time between France, America, and Spain. Sylvia was born Nancy Woodbridge Beach, but she changed her name to Sylvia. Both were writers, publishers, and translators, but their greatest influences on literature were the result of their tireless economic and social support of the writers and artists of the era. Although they were very private about their personal lives, their romance inspired and sustained both of them in their literary careers. Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier were bright lights of the Lost Generation in post-WWI Paris.

In 1980, on one of Steve Vai's early tours, playing at Notre Dame University, Laurel Fishman showed up. He said "OOOhhhh my God!" and then dumped the jar with the shit in the trash can outside the elevator. Bassist Jim Pons, was fascinated with the article and opened it to smell it while waiting for the elevator at the hotel. We are told that Fishman showed up to meet Zappa with a perfectly spherical ball of her own shit in a mason jar, and presented it to Zappa, who had not known about the contest or the meeting in advance. Fishman won the contest by saying since hearing the song Call Any Vegetable she had gotten in touch with her friends in the vegetable kingdom and, as a result of this, her body functions had been more regular. Fishman won a competition to win back stage access at the show, put on by a local promoter and radio station, to tell in twenty-five words or less how the Mothers of Invention had saved your life. In The Real Frank Zappa Book Zappa relates a story of his introduction to Fishman in1971. Very Fine condition (VF) Please note any price stickers unless stated. Werlin disguises the retro elements by creating feminist male leads, and even though the outcome is never in doubt, she builds nail-biting tension. Lucy can break the curse only by performing three impossible tasks set forth in a variant of the ballad “Scarborough Fair.” None of her forebears have come even close, but then none of them had help from the selfless Markowitzes, the love-struck and self-sacrificing Zach or the Internet, where items like goat horns can be easily located: Lucy is the luckiest accursed girl ever. Boy-next-door-type Zach, home from college and living with the Markowitzes, happens upon Miranda's teenage diary, which outlines a curse placed on Lucy's family generations earlier by the evil Elfin Knight: the women all give birth as teens before descending into madness. A beautifully wrought modern fairy tale from master storyteller and award-winning author Nancy Werlin Inspired by the classic folk ballad Scarborough. She is a junior in high school, runs track. Committed to keeping the baby, she nonetheless sees disturbing parallels to her mentally ill mother, Miranda, who had Lucy as a teen, then left her in the care of the Markowitzes-Soledad, a nurse-midwife, and her husband, Leo. Inspired by the classic folk ballad Scarborough Fair, this is a wonderfully riveting novel of suspense, romance, and fantasy. Seventeen-year-old Lucy Scarborough appears to lead a normal life. Lucy Scarborough, raped on prom night, is pregnant. ) melds fantasy and suspense in a contemporary setting for a romance with plenty of teen appeal. So it felt fitting to discuss the entirety of his oeuvre over seven salons. The fact that you can know an author’s work fully, especially one as great as Ted Chiang, is attractive. Except for the most recent material, it’s all included within two books: Stories of Your Life and Others and Exhalation: Stories. Second, you can literally read his entire body of work in a short time. All are of excellent quality several are masterpieces and have won prizes. First, he makes sure that his stories are real good. His most famous work is “Story of Your Life,” the basis for the movie Arrival.Ĭhiang’s slow publishing pace implies two things. He’s been publishing stories since 1990, but very few of them: only 18 over 31 years. His style is clear, lucid, and usually optimistic. Most people who know me probably know Ted Chiang at this point, but in case you don’t: Chiang is an American writer, specializing in short science fiction. One of the things I did, from January to August, is hosting seven Interintellect salons - online discussions, in the form of a book club - about (almost) all of Ted Chiang’s short stories.
